Thanks for the well thought out need and revamp necessitated on that side of the pond. Sorry just begins our intent to stand up again…
My hope prevails , my old fingers avec le pen sur la table, thank Macron for his polished putting NOT MY president in his place with truth and dominant decency..many of us have stood Germany’s long fight out of harm as a beacon of how to stay the course fighting for FREEDOM.
Patricia, People are getting their activist legs. As is recommended one should be involved in the local as much as possible. It is great that people are packing town halls. I am working on both sides of the situation to support democracy in both continents. We are all in this together. Slava Ukraini!
The simple fact that the USA is part of a new axis of evil is a gut punch. For those who lived thru the Cold War, this seems incomprehensible and unforgivable. Yet, the orange fascist's base is powered by many who, in their youth, defended democracy. I will never completely understand it. But "Linda on Life Abroad" has become a necessary read for me in order to comprehend the global point of view. Thank you.
Thank you Carol. It is a gut punch to us all I assure you. My parents were active in the Civil Rights Movement and that is why I was raised to be an activist. It was part of being a citizen. While my daughter is very understated, she is an activist too.
Thank you for this information. I appreciate your perspective from Germany. I find it almost incomprehensible that America has joined the Axis of Evil. Europe must be clear-eyed and determined about the future. My heart is with you.
Yes. First of all I believe a lot of people voted for Merz because he projected this already. The thing is that in CDU/CSU they are all about cutting social spending to pay for military. The SPD is all about going beyond the debt brake so that they can pay for social supports and fund the military and so are the Greens. Ths is what Merz is going to have to sell the collaborating party on, and the German people.
It is going to be a hard sell to the German people. Already people in Merz's party are complaining that he betrayed them when they voted for him, because there is no way Germany is coming up with all this money without going over the debt brake. I truly view this is an emergency that was an emergency all along, but Olaf Scholz did not realize that he should have claimed it was an emergency because people were like frogs in a tank where the heat was gradually being turned up, whereas now they are like frogs in the tank that got thrown into boiling water. Also, Germans like to complain about things, and get out and protest, so there is that pressure.
The 80 years of believing in being peace loving, non-threatening Germans, and hoping that the Nazi taint will go away might be over. Not everyone can wrap their head around that. The real Nazis in Germany, the AfD, are friendly with Trump and Putin of course. They are not alone. They just want friendship, cheap oil and reaffirmation of their narrow unrealistic values. I personally know people who do not think Russia is that much of a threat. The Left likes Putin as an anti American imperialist, at least some part of the Left, the old leftists feel this way. Some of the newer ones feel like they just want peace because it is good for the environment and more money for social programs. The Greens don't want nukes. Merz does.
There is a lot more we will know after the meeting tomorrow. However, Dean Blundell was claiming today on his podcast with Zev Shalev, that Trump has been on the Russian payroll for laundering money for decades, and that the French and British have intel on Trump and his friendliness with Russia, and that they would be telling Zelenskyy not to trust Trump. I can see Merz is not trusting Trump. I do not like Merz, but I agree with his feelings about Trump. He is not to be trusted. Putin doesn't trust him either. No one should.
Right now in Germany on Social media there is a fake letter going around pretending to be Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum telling Trump and Musk off. In it she threatens that the whole world will be boycotting all US products and suggests some other products that could be purchased instead of US brands. It is signed for the world. This tells you that there is a lot of hostility here towards Trump and Musk.
I am just wondering if Putin is going to think in the long run that Trump encouraging the rearming of Germany and having the countries of Europe build up their militaries is going to be in Russia's best interest. He puts a lot of time and money into his bots and spreading his lies, but there is a growing awareness in countries not run by sociopaths that this is going on, and hopefully they will do something about it. Is anyone in Europe going to trust intel from the US under Donald Trump?
I think Europe and nukes will be under discussion too.
I cannot imagine that Russia has any interest in a rearmed Germany. That has NEVER gone well for Russia. They lost 20m people last time and the time before that their government collapsed under the weight of revolution.
You get exactly what I am saying. I don't think Putin is thinking this through. Perhaps he thinks the "war" will be over before Germany gets it together. What I am reading this morning is that Merz and Scholz are agreeing on raising the debt ceiling for military spending. It is the other part that is not clear, which is the funding of social programs. Germany needs a smart campaign to convince the people that this is the way to go. In my family my relatives out of the countryside where we plan to go if Germany is dragged into war, are not so convinced it will come to that. They do not follow US news as much, just what the German press shares. I would say that preparing for the worst case, Russia goes after a country like Germany although scaring Scholz was a past time for Putin. Merz is a different person. Not the same experience.
While Trump is destroying the American economy. Germany is going to probably rebuild theirs on the backs of the military industry. The US can count on India for weapons orders, but China is not. My friend's daughter, who has her training at MIT as an aerospace engineer, came to Germany to do her PhD in Bremen, but everything was military industry in Bremen so she switched to sustainable engineering in Freiburg. So, I get to hear some about the weapons industry from my friend. Still, it is very likely now that Germany is given the green light to go ahead and be a country that is involved in war preparation even if it is in a supporting role, there will be more weapons innovation.
Also, this morning I was reading about Europe discussing participating in an air shield over Ukraine.Today is a day where Europe tries to get its plans past Hungary, and perhaps Slovakia. Last time Scholz sent Orban out of the room, but now can they get Orban and Fico out of the room? I am not sure. May have to work around them. I would assume that Rutte, von der Leyen and Kallus are all thinking of ways to get around these obstructive Russian asset leaders.
Turning off electronic surveillance for Ukraine in the middle of a war will reverberate across weapons systems orders worldwide. Who wants to be dependent on an ally who l can turn off your weapons systems on a whim?
I totally agree. In fact, as I pointed out to a friend today, autocrats don't really have allies. While there is collusion between autocratic countries that don't have anything in common because they all help each other get around sanctions, which Anne Applebaum discusses in her book Autocrats, Inc. as they protect their kleptocratic way of life. It is not like they really trust each other. Do you think Putin trusts Trump? I don't. He has no reason to.
Trump may be groomed to do what Putin wants, because as Ruth Ben-Ghiat's guest Brook Harrington, author of the said on her Substack Zoom meeting, Putin comes first because he is known to have people killed who he feels betray him. Trump is not known for that, at least not yet. Does Netanyahu trust Trump? Probably not. He might trust Kushner because at least Kushner is Jewish, but then again, Kushner is in bed with the Saudis who also have people killed.
The advantage for democratic countries, which is diminishing, is more reason to trust their allies, but right now, Putin has been working really really, hard to destabilize democratic countries, and there may be a point where they need to do what Romania did, which is say we are not going to recognize the results of elections where there has been heavy disinformation interference. I don't know that EU countries are set up to do that, or willing to do it. Just right now I feel more trust in countries that do not have a Kleptocrat at their head.

The US UN vote siding with Russia was an absolute disgrace. Thank you for explaining everything happening in Germany so thoroughly.
Thank you for this information. I appreciate your perspective from Germany. I find it almost incomprehensible that America has joined the Axis of Evil. Europe must be clear-eyed and determined about the future. My heart is with you.
Thank you. Europe really needs to rise to the occasion like Ukraine did.
Any thoughts now that Merz has been more clear about his desire to increase defense spending across Europe?
Yes. First of all I believe a lot of people voted for Merz because he projected this already. The thing is that in CDU/CSU they are all about cutting social spending to pay for military. I am watching what happens to Orban today.
Honestly I am only now getting informed on internal European politics.
